When I think of the turmoil and tragedy between Israel and Gaza, one of the few ways I can keep calm and keep going is to trust that there is a supreme creator who oversees everything. This being is particularly interested in the safety of Israel. Without God, all the pain, war and increasingly intense upheaval throughout the world can become overwhelming or absurdly unreal. Trusting God to work through the worst situations and to honor promises he has made through Hebrew Scripture can make all the difference between staring numbly at the latest YouTube video or connecting with people and situations in meaningful ways. So what did He promise?

God promised to make Israel a great and blessed nation, which in turn blesses others (Genesis 12:1-3). Conversely, those who hate Israel will suffer the consequences. Israel’s history supports this, even up to the present. Just a few days ago, one of the hundreds of rockets launched by Hamas hit a power source in Israel that was fueling Gaza. Despite the circumstances, God is keeping Israel safe and reversing attempts to destroy her, just like Passover and the Egyptian chariots, or Purim and Haman’s gallows.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, there is quite a bit of talk about karma and other mystical concepts. In my own spiritual journey, I’ve come to believe that what some people call “karma” is really God’s way of ensuring that justice is served, whether in the short or long term (Proverbs 26:27). And justice is critical to meaning in life.

God can be trusted to care for Israelis and Palestinians and anyone else worldwide, and there will be sense to it because He is watching over the situation. “He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4). But his promises go beyond Israel’s safety, and even beyond justice. Through Israel’s Messiah, God promises to love each of us regardless of what we have done wrong. His sacrificial death made it possible for us to receive divine forgiveness. Peace with God and with each other is an option for all who believe.

Are you open to this possibility? Have you explored it for yourself? True peace is promised for Israel, but it is also available to each of us through Israel’s Keeper. To find out more, please go to our free How to Know God resource.
